What Is an Insurance Agent?

An insurance agent is a professional who sells and services insurance policies on behalf of insurers. Agents help individuals and businesses choose coverage for auto, health, life, property, and other risks, and explain policy terms and claims procedures.

Is a License Required?

All states require agents to obtain a resident or non‑resident insurance producer license for each line of authority they intend to sell (such as life, health, property & casualty). Some states also require an appointment by an insurer before soliciting business.

  2. Meet eligibility requirements – Typically includes a minimum age (18), background check, and residency or citizenship requirements.

State insurance departments often grant reciprocal licensing to producers who already hold an active license in another state. The non‑resident license may be obtained through NIPR with proof of good standing; however, some states require additional filings or fees.
